The Communist Organization of Greece strongly denounces to the Greek and international public opinion the new pogrom unleashed by the Ankara regime against the Left, the labour and women’s movement and the progressive intellectuals in Turkey and N. Kurdistan.
According to the information available until now, yesterday (Tuesday 10 March 2009) the “anti”terrorist units of the Turkish state arrested over 50 persons in 6 cities, 33 of them in Istanbul. Among the arrested are cadres of the legal political party ESP, journalists of the legal newspaper Atilim, editors of the publication “Art and Life”, representatives of trade-unions and women’s organizations, as well as people accused to be members of the outlawed party MLKP.
Part 1. New murderous attack against the movement
At 22:05 hours of Tuesday 24 February, the Social Centre of Immigrants and the offices of the Network for the Political and Social Rights and of the group “Rosa” (one of the organizations of the Radical Left Coalition SYRIZA) have been the target of an unprecedented murderous attack. An unknown person tried to throw a defensive hand grenade through one of the windows while a meeting was taking place inside the building. Fortunately, the reinforced window did not break and the hand grenade fell back in a jardiniere outside the building, where it exploded. Had the hand grenade penetrated the window and exploded in the meeting room, many comrades would be killed, as the hand grenade was of defensive type, with high power. It is characteristic that the explosion destroyed the stone-made jardiniere and smashed the windows in nearby buildings. Many people from the surrounding shops immediately ran after the perpetrator of the murderous attempt, who managed to enter a car waiting for him in the next corner and escaped. The witnesses wrote down the number of the car used for the escape: later on it has been revealed that it is an “unregistered” car plate (as those used by the “state security” services…). The Communist Organization of Greece issued the following statement:
After the revolt of December in Greece, a big debate develops within the Greek Left concerning the attitude of the communists in front of the bourgeois governments. This heated discussion is part of a greater debate about the tasks, the strategy and the tactics of the left and communist forces in Greece. The polemical character of the debate is owed to the fact that, during December 2008, the split within the Greek Left became more wide: One part (KOE, the Radical Left Coalition/SYRIZA and the extra-parliamentarian left groups) supported the Revolt. Another part (mostly the Communist Party of Greece/KKE, as well as the right-wingers of the former “euro-communist” current) condemned the movement and labeled it as “violent acts of masked rioters of suspicious origin and of reactionary character”. Thus, indirectly but objectively, aligned themselves with the bourgeois-governmental block of “law and order”. Since January 2009 the debate became very acute, as the KKE leadership attacked repeatedly KOE and SYRIZA with statements and publications in its Press, slandering us as “supporters of the social-democratic PASOK” because of our slogan “Down with this government of murderers!”.
The Communist Organization of Greece (KOE) expresses its full support and solidarity with the ongoing mass protests, strikes and mobilizations of the peoples of Guadeloupe and Martinique against the high prices of the basic goods and services and for real increase of salaries and pensions. We condemn the bloody repression exercised by the institutions and the police of the colonial French state against the legitimate mass popular revolt.
We call upon the Left and the militant trade unions to express their solidarity with the collectif "Liyannaj Kont Pwofitasyon" (LKP, http://www.lkp-gwa.org) which regroups several social and political organisations of Guadeloupe, among them the Union Generale des Travailleurs de Guadeloupe (UGTG, http://ugtg.org), as well as to the communist forces of the islands, such as the PKLS of Martinique (Pati Kominis pou Lendépandans èk Sosyalism / Parti Communiste pour l'Indépendance et le Socialisme, http://www.pkls.org).
Follows in french language the solidarity message of KOE:
The leadership of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) published today in its paper “Rizospastis” a communication worthy only to spit at, slandering the as using “state security services’ methods”. The leadership of KKE, after having denounced the December Revolt as “a conspiracy well-organized by internal and foreign dark centers” (!), has now clearly lost its sangfroid. It escalates its attack and targets the Communist Organization of Greece, proving once more that it cannot withstand a political and ideological debate. This is the reason why the leadership of KKE labels as “provocation” and “state security services’ methods” the documents of political debate.
The criticism towards KKE cannot be labeled as “anticommunism”. The prostitution of the communist movement, the war against the line of left unity action waged by the leadership of KKE, while at the same time it aligns itself with the bourgeois government: THIS is anticommunism!
An Appeal for Solidarity
Dear Friends and Comrades,
We urge you to read the following information and to express your solidarity:
Konstantina Kouneva, today 44 years old, is a Bulgarian immigrant living and working in Greece in order to support her family. She worked for many years as a janitor-employee of the private firm “OIKOMET”, which rents its employees in public sector’s enterprises. This firm is owned by Mr. Ikonomakis, old cadre of the social-democratic opposition party PASOK, and its legal councillor is Mr. Tzanis, former vice-minister of Interior Affairs (when PASOK was in power). The last years, Konstantina was cleaning the installations of the “Athens Piraeus Electric Railways (ISAP)”. The sector of janitors is one of the most exploited, as many employees are immigrants and subject of blackmailing by their bosses, while the state services and the trade-union bureaucrats do nothing in order to apply even the most basic and insufficient labour legislation.
Statement Nr 5 / 2009 – Friday 16 January 2009: Against the complicity of the Greek government with the US-Zionist crimes in GazaThe Communist Organization of Greece (KOE) salutes the heroic Resistance in Gaza and the thousands of Greeks mobilizing every day all over the country in support of the martyred Palestinian People and against the reactionary Karamanlis’ government. Yesterday Thursday 15 January took place in the port of Astakos (Western Greece) a massive and militant mobilization against the attempt of the Karamanlis’ government to facilitate the shipment of US arms to the Israeli Neo-Nazis. The contingent of KOE, by far the biggest and most combative, was in the front line of the protest. The demonstrators, despite the heavy presence of the police, pushed away the barbed wire “protecting” the privatized port and entered the location, scanting slogans against the complicity of the Greek government, denouncing the US-Israel genocidal aggression, demanding the immediate break of all relations with the Zionist state and saluting the Palestinian Resistance. The Communist Organization of Greece, which mobilized all its forces in Western Greece, warned that any further attempt to use the Greek soil against the Palestinian People will meet the resolute and combative resistance of the region’s inhabitants and of the Greek People as a whole.
The movement of solidarity with Palestine marks its first tactical victory!
The Pentagon announcement, that the shipment of US arms to Israel through the port of Astakos “will be postponed because of security reasons”, belied the pathetic Greek Foreign Affairs Minister, who was declaring that “Greece is not implicated in any such shipment”.
However, the shipment of US arms to the Zionist murderers through Astakos will not be postponed: it will be CANCELLED once and for all, because the Greek People, responding to the call of PFLP, proved that we will not tolerate that Greece becomes an intermediate between the international terrorists US and Israel.
The Communist Organization of Greece (KOE) calls upon the Greek People: Remain on alert! Smash all the sneaky attempts of Karamanlis’ government to assist the Israeli Neo-Nazis! All united to the protest in the port of Astakos on Thursday 15/1!
Active solidarity with the Palestinian People!
Stop all the diplomatic, military, political, economic, cultural relations with Israel!
13 January 2009, Communist Organization of Greece (KOE)
The Communist Organization of Greece (KOE) condemns the shameful implication of Greece in the plans to ship huge cargos of US arms to Israel through the Greek port of Astakos (Western Greece). If shipped, these arms will be used for the continuation of the genocidal Zionist aggression in Gaza. The implication of the Greek port of Astakos reveals the full complicity of the government of Karamanlis in the crime perpetrated against the Palestinian People.
The claims of the Greek government (“we know nothing about it”) are sheer lies and pure hypocrisy. The complicity of the Greek government is revealed to the whole world through the attempt to use of the Greek soil in order to supply new arms to the Israeli Neo-Nazis. This is not a a unique episode: during the genocidal US war against Iraq, the naval base of Souda (Crete) was also used by the “liberators of Iraq”.
